Why is the substantial hex wrench so substantial?

This is the oppsite of my night last night. I had to use an 1/8 inch (?) open end wrench to remove a bolt.

I had one like this, a 17mm for my manny tranny drain plug. The clearance was tight, so a 17mm hex socket was too wide to fit. Had to special order it from Grainger, IIRC.
